THE book for elementary education mathematics content courses! Designed to help prospective teachers of elementary school mathematics learn content beyond the rote level, this text stimulates readers to think beyond just getting the problem right and fosters their development into thoughtful, reflective, self-motivated, life-long learners. It stresses the what and why of elementary school mathematics content. Hints are provided about how to teach the content but this is mostly left to courses and texts that are dedicated to that purpose. The text is organized around the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics' Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. The Standards dictate the ba...

Collected mathematical papers. 4 (1984)

This publication was made possible through a bequest from my beloved late wife. United together in this present collection are those works by the author which have not previously appeared in book form. The following are excepted: Vorlesungen über Differential und Integralrechnung (Lectures on Differential and Integral Calculus) Vols 1-3, Birkhäuser Verlag, Basel (1965-1968); Aufgabensammlung zur Infinitesimalrechnung (Exercises in Infinitesimal Calculus) Vols I, 2a, 2b, and 3, Birkhäuser Verlag, Basel (1967-1977); two issues from Memorial des Sciences on Conformal Mapping (written together with C. Gattegno), Gauthier-Villars, Paris (1949); Solution of Equations in Euclidean and Banach Spa...

Consciousness

This book is not an intellectual history or popular summary of recent work on consciousness in humans. Bernard Baars (1988), Edelman and Tononi (2000), and many others, have written such, and done it well indeed. This book, rather, brings the powerful analytic machinery of communication theory to bear on the Global Neuronal Workspace (GNW) model of consciousness which Baars introduced, and does so in a formal mathematical manner. It is not the first such attempt. The philospher Fred Dretske (1981), indep- dent of Baars, long ago outlined how information theory might illuminate the understanding of mind. Adapting his approach on the necessary conditions for mental process, we apply a previous...

Nexus Network Journal 8,2

This book presents an exploration of the arch from the points of view of architecture, mathematics, engineering, construction history, and cultural symbolism. Leonardo da Vinci described the arch as "two weaknesses which, leaning on each other, become a strength," a metaphor for the way that science and art lean on each other to strengthen our lives.

Advanced Courses of Mathematical Analysis IV

This proceedings is a collection of articles by front-line researchers in Mathematical Analysis, giving the reader a wide perspective of the current research in several areas like Functional Analysis, Complex Analysis and Measure Theory. The works are a fundamental source for current and future developments in these research fields. The articles and surveys have been collected as well as reference results scattered in the corresponding literature and thus, are highly useful to researchers. Contents:Mini-Courses:Weyl Type Theorems for Bounded Linear Operators on Banach Spaces (Pietro Aiena)Finitely Additive Measures in Action (Joe Diestel and Angela Spalsbury)Sampling and Recovery of Bandlimi...

This volume contains the proceedings of the conference on Computer Aided V- i?cation (CAV 2002), held in Copenhagen, Denmark on July 27-31, 2002. CAV 2002 was the 14th in a series of conferences dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practice of computer-assisted formal analysis methods for software and hardware systems. The conference covers the spectrum from theoretical - sults to concrete applications, with an emphasis on practical veri?cation tools, including algorithms and techniques needed for their implementation. The c- ference has traditionally drawn contributions from researchers as well as prac- tioners in both academia and industry. This year we received 94 regular paper submissions out of which 35 were selected. Each submission received an average of 4 referee reviews. In addition, the CAV program contained 11 tool presentations selected from 16 submissions. For each tool presentation, a demo was given at the conference. The large number of tool submissions and presentations testi?es to the liveliness of the ?eld and its applied ?avor.

This book considers evolution at different scales: sequences, genes, gene families, organelles, genomes and species. The focus is on the mathematical and computational tools and concepts, which form an essential basis of evolutionary studies, indicate their limitations, and give them orientation. Recent years have witnessed rapid progress in the mathematics of evolution and phylogeny, with models and methods becoming more realistic, powerful, and complex. Aimed at graduates and researchers in phylogenetics, mathematicians, computer scientists and biologists, and including chapters by leading scientists: A. Bergeron, D. Bertrand, D. Bryant, R. Desper, O. Elemento, N. El-Mabrouk, N. Galtier, O. Gascuel, M. Hendy, S. Holmes, K. Huber, A. Meade, J. Mixtacki, B. Moret, E. Mossel, V. Moulton, M. Pagel, M.-A. Poursat, D. Sankoff, M. Steel, J. Stoye, J. Tang, L.-S. Wang, T. Warnow, Z. Yang, this book of contributed chapters explains the basis and covers the recent results in this highly topical area.
